How to Care for Enamel & Crystal Jewelry

Enamel and crystal jewelry is made to sparkle — and with a little care, your festive pieces will look just as bright next December as they do today. Follow these simple steps to keep them shining season after season.

1. Put Jewelry On Last

Perfume, hairspray, lotion and makeup can dull crystals and leave a film on gold-tone finishes. Get ready first, let everything dry, then put on your jewelry.

2. Keep It Dry

Remove jewelry before showering, swimming, washing dishes or exercising. Water and sweat can tarnish plated metals over time and loosen the setting around stones.

3. Clean Gently

After wearing, wipe your piece with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove oils and fingerprints. Avoid jewelry dips, harsh chemicals, toothpaste and ultrasonic cleaners, which can damage enamel and plating.

4. Handle Enamel With Care

Enamel is glass-based and durable, but it can chip if dropped on a hard surface or knocked against a table. Take extra care when fastening clasps or removing a necklace over your head.

5. Store Pieces Separately

Store each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined jewelry box compartment so stones and enamel don't scratch one another. Fasten necklace clasps before storing to prevent tangles.

6. Pack It Away Properly After the Holidays

When the decorations come down, give your holiday jewelry a final wipe, place it in a pouch, and store it somewhere cool and dry — away from bathrooms and windowsills. A small silica gel packet in the box helps keep moisture away until next season.
